Todorov in 1969 produced a theory which he believed to be able to be applied to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative pattern. They all went through stages called the equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement, solving and again equilibrium.Todorov focused on the structure of a film including an Equlibirum, an event or series of events, distruption and then order.

There are many ways in which this theory can relate to thriller films. Todorv suggests that it is easier for a target audience to follow the opening sequence if they are given a reason to have a connection with the characters and storyline.
