Stalked at 17

In this film we see two main characters who are seen as typical teenagers at settings such as school and parties. However the change of events between their relationship ruins their happy mood and creates a drastic change of mood and atmosphere between characters and their storyline. Half way through the film we see that the boyfriend is turning into a stalker and becoming too much for the girlfriend to the point where she is scared of him. This film shows a physcological thriller.

Camerawork/Movement -

The camera work in the film Stalked at 17 is interesting when considering the use of close ups as there are many within the opening sequence of this film in order to suggest the emotional change for the characters. An example of this is when there is a close up to the female characters face whilst she is calm and has no sense of uncertainty, however towards the end of the opening sequence we see an extreme close up of her face in a state of panic. This suggests emotional change for the girl within the storyline, creating a similar sense of unease for the audience.

Close ups - There are many close ups within the opening sequence of 'Stalked at 17'. For example the close ups also suggest the atmosphere change between characters for example there is a close up of the female character's face when she is calm and has no sense of uncertainty. However towards the end of the opening sequence we see a close up of her face in a state of panic suggesting the chance of atmosphere and storyline. This creates a shock factor for the audience. We could utilise this in our thriller film by using facial expressions to portray the change in story.

Establishing shot - the establishing shot at the start of the opening sequence is the setting of a city. This suggests that the thriller is set in a commonly known place allowing the audience to relate to the location of the characters and how the environment that she is in can affect the help she receieves later on in the film.

Mise-en-scene -

Lighting - The lighting throughout the opening sequence contrasts between characters for example with the female character and her child the lighting is quite bright suggesting a calm nature which foreshadows oncoming events. However the male character is shown in a dark lighting suggesting that he is going to be a threat to the characters seen as calm.

Props - the props shown at the start of the opening sequence of 'Stalked at 17'. For example note books, pens and work are spread out on the bed of the female character's bed whilst having a baby monitor on the side of her bed. This gives a sense of character to the film suggesting that the female character is a young mother who is looking after her child whilst doing school work. This allows the audience to automatically connect with the character and her background. This could be used similarly in our thriller film by using props to introduce the life style of characters. Another use of props shown in the opening sequence is a gun used by the male character of the film. This also gives a sense of character as we see the male as the more dominant character giving the impression that he is the stalker suggested in the title of the film.

Clothing - the clothing worn by the female character and her child are seen as traditional clothing for typical people living in society. This suggests that the characters are a normal family who are getting on with their day to day lives, this is a type of character that the audience can relate to. However we see the male character in covered up black clothing with a hoodie and jeas in which he hides his weapon in his pocket. This suggests that the male character is the 'bag guy' of the film.

Editing -

Pace - throughout the opening sequence the pace is quite slow as the female character is checkng on her child and carrying on with her studies. However when the male character dominates the scene and the setting of the opening sequence changes, the pace quickens between characters suggesting a state of panic and a chaotic nature taking over a calm nature.

Transitions - the use of transitions are shown through names and titles that come up on screen. These titles and names are shown in a gothic font and transition onto the scene slowly suggesting the pace of the film and how the atmosphere of the scenes and the atmosphere between characters is soon going to change.

Sound -

Non-diegetic sound - the use of a soundtrack is shown in this opening sequence of a thriller film to create suspense and tension for the audience to follow. This can be used similarly in our thriller opening sequence to allow the audience to foreshadow events using the soundtrack they hear before the characters know what is going to happen.

Dialouge - the use of dialogue at the end of the opening sequence suggests the threatening language used by the dominant male character using props such as a gun to threaten the female character. The male sayd 'I'm taking the baby, and you're coming with us'. This suggests the main storyline of the film illustratng that this character is the stalker shown in the title of the film. This could be used similarly in our thriller film to suggest to the audience a binary opposite of good and bad so the storyline is easier to follow and understand.

We liked the use of non-diegetic sound in this opening sequence. As said before, it is used to create suspense and tension in the scene which attractts audiences as they become unsure of what might hapen, intriguing them to continue watching. We wanted to use this style of soundtrack in ur own production. The scene of the film is already mysterious and confusing on its own, and the use of a soundtrack used in a film like this one would be effective.
